We are lovers of coffee, tea, surf, skate, and community. Above all, we love the connections that all of these things bring to us. We strive for passion, obsessive ritual, and to make an impact on the world immediately surrounding us. We aim to craft coffee and tea, source the best products, and showcase peoples crafts in our space, right here in the Rockaway Hotel, amidst Rockaway Beach, New York City. Why? Because we’ve always loved bringing interesting people together, telling their stories, and sharing our passions. 

We envision the Rockaway Beach that we never knew we wanted to live in. A beachside getaway home to artists, craftspeople, intellectuals, and those passionate about stuff. Just plain stuff. People that get out of bed every morning excited to do that thing. The Greenhouse Cafe isn’t meant to be just a place for coffee or tea, but a place for people to congregate, share ideas, and be inspired. Barista Position

Greenhouse Cafe employs a focus on coffee and tea quality, and the connections and partnerships used to source and curate our selections. Our baristas share these passions, and even obsessions. They’re driven, motivated, and care about food, drink, and the things that make food and drink special and worth indulging in. They care about continuing education, and building connections with others that feel the same.

Duties

  • Following opening/closing procedures 

  • Maintain appropriate stock of goods

  • Constantly communicate with managers/supervisors appropriately and as needed

  • Craft beverages according to company protocol 

  • Engage with customers to communicate GC mission and vision 

  • Maintain a clean and well-organized work area

  • Comfortable with POS and well versed with knowledge of menu/ offerings 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Charismatic and exceptionally communicative

  • High energy, enthusiastic, and displays an affinity for our vision and company culture

  • Ability to follow directions and established procedures

  • Ability to visually examine products for quality and freshness

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed

  • Must be able to lift 50lbs and stand for 8 hours

  • 1-2 years of experience in the food & beverage industry

Compensation

  • $15/hr + tips + company benefits (for full time)

  • $16/hr (w/ Food Handlers cert) + tips + company benefits (for full time)

The Greenhouse Café is located in the new Rockaway Hotel, offering a fresh and innovative way to experience Rockaway Beach as a getaway home to artists, thinkers, tinkerers, and those who live their passion. The Greenhouse Cafe isn’t meant to be just a place for coffee or tea, but a place for people to congregate, share ideas, and be inspired. We envision the GC as a hub of inspiration where the best of coffee, tea, surf, skate, and culinary craft naturally combine. We’re launching a boutique-style service of creative breads and pastries to appeal to local or lifelong New Yorkers, day trippers, and out-of-town guests alike. The café is open 7 days a week 7am to 5pm. We have a position open immediately for the right candidate who is ready to grow into a unique and exciting opportunity!

Responsibilities include:

  • Working with an Executive Chef to execute seasonal recipes and a rotating limited menu.

  • Oversee daily production of whole grain sweet and savory pastries and eventually high-hydration sourdough breads.

  • Scaling, mixing, shaping, and baking.

  • Preparing house made condiments and salads.

  • Scaling and packaging prepared foods with attention to detail and a clean and neat presentation.

  • Maintaining an immaculate work space including proper cleaning of equipment, cleaning as you go, and end of shift cleaning according to NYC DOH standards.

  • Ability to work in an efficient and timely manner.

  • Ordering and maintaining inventory of ingredients.

Hours: Part-time to start, growing into a full-time position; early morning hours between 4 to 5am start. Must be available weekends.

The ideal candidate has: 

  • Minimum 1 year experience with stone ground flours, whole grains, and natural leavening.

  • Can accurately scale recipes using baker’s math.

  • Strong organizational/time management skills.

  • Effective communication in both written and oral applications including email and text.

  • Enthusiasm, a positive attitude, and collaborative work spirit.

  • Independent and hard worker.

  • Strong cleanliness and work ethic.

  • Ability to lift 50# bags of flour and stand for 8 hours.

  • At least 18 Years of Age with reliable transportation.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
